Punjab wrest early initiative November 17, 2004 19:36 IST Punjab amassed 422 runs in their first innings before reducing Assam to 113 for 3 on the second day of their Ranji Trophy Elite Group 'B' match in Amritsar on Wednesday. Resuming the day at 297 for three wickets, Pankaj Dharmani (62 not out overnight) added some valuable runs before falling leg before wicket to R Satish for a well-made 85, which included six fours and three hits over the fence. Wicketkeeper-batsman Chandan Madan chipped in with a useful 43, with the help of six fours and a six in 103 balls. For the visitors, Parag Das took three wickets while two scalps were taken by R K Yadav and R Satish each. Chasing the huge score, Assam's batsmen started on a disastrous note with opener Parag Das falling cheaply on 12 with the team's total on 13, off Gagandeep's bowling . A run later, his partner Pervez Aziz fell to the same bowler without opening his score. However, captain Zakaria Zuffri and Vasant Sarvaman steadied Assam's innings and took the score to 106 when Sarvaman was ruled leg before wicket to Navdeep Singh for 49 runs. At close of play, Zuffari was battling it out on 41.
