Wadekar eyes coach's job again

M. Chhaya in Kolkata | April 29, 2005 15:32 IST

Former India coach Ajit Wadekar is interested in the job again. He hasn't approached the Board of Control for Cricket in India yet, but the former Indian captain has dropped large hints that he is not averse to coaching the Indian team again.

Wadekar told his close friends that he is willing to put in his bio-data for the job if the BCCI so desires.

"I have the experience and everyone knows my contribution," Wadekar told his friends.

Asked what the Board would do if Wadekar officially applies for the job, BCCI joint-secretary Gautam Dasgupta said: "If he applies, obviously it has to be considered."

But, BCCI sources told rediff.com that it is unlikely Wadekar would be recalled for the job."The odds are in favour of a foreign coach after John Wright's success," they said.

Wadekar, however, doesn't agree. He feels Wright's contribution was nothing out of the ordinary, and that the New Zealander was lucky in getting to coach India's best team ever.

The former left-hand batsman has strongly advocated employing an Indian coach and even drawn up a panel in which, besides him, also figures Sandeep Patil and Mohinder Amarnath.

Wright's contract ran out after the Pakistan series this month, but if he wished the BCCI was willing to extend it. The former Kiwi skipper said he wanted to spend more time with family.
