Ganguly ready to return

July 29, 2005 16:33 IST

Deposed India captain Sourav Ganguly expressed surprise at his ban for slow over-rates in One-Day Internationals being reduced from six to four matches and said he does not foresee any problem playing under Rahul Dravid in the tri-series in Sri Lanka.

"I did not expect that the ban will be reduced so much," Ganguly told newspersons at his Behala residence in Kolkata.

Ganguly, who led India since 2000 until his ban in April this year, said his sole aim as a cricketer is to play for the country and it does not matter whether he is captain or not.

"I don't mind playing under anybody - be it Dravid or [Virender] Sehwag or Harbhajan [Singh]."

Ganguly was banned for six ODIs after India twice failed to complete its overs in time during the home series against Pakistan.

His appeal against the ban was turned down by an ICC Appeals Commissioner, but another plea by the Board of Control for Cricket India with an ICC Dispute Resolution Committee resulted in a partial relief for him.

Having sat out of the last two matches of the Pakistan series, Ganguly would be eligible to play for India from the third match of the tri-series in Sri Lanka.

India take on the hosts in the opening match on Saturday. The West Indies are the third team in the tourney.

Ganguly will leave for Colombo on Sunday en route to Dambulla to join the Indian team before the side's third match against the Lankans on August 3.

The southpaw said though he mostly played as an opener in the one-dayers, he would not mind batting in any position to suit the needs of the team.
