The eighth edition of the Women's Cricket World Cup in Pretoria, South Africa got off to a wet start on Tuesday, as the opening day's play was interrupted by rain. Rain forced players to leave the field shortly before lunch as only the first innings of all four matches could be completed.

India were in a strong position having reached 4 for no loss after bowling out Sri Lanka for 116 in 46.5 overs.

The match was abandoned because of heavy downpour and both teams received three points each.

India's Neetu David claimed three for 17 in 7.5 overs and Nooshin-Al-Khadeer took two for 28 in 10 overs.

Shashikala Siriwardena (29), Chamari Polgammpola (20) and Hiruka Fernando (21) were the main contributors for Sri Lanka.

Other three matches between New Zealand and West Indies; England and Australia; and South Africa and Ireland were also abandoned due to heavy rains. All these teams will also share points.

India's second match is on Thursday against Ireland. The other matches to be played tomorrow are -- South Africa vs West Indies; India vs Ireland; New Zealand vs Australia; and England vs Sri Lanka.
