Warne may quit Tests in two years

Australia leg spinner Shane Warne could quit Test cricket in the next two years, his brother and manager Jason said on Sunday.

Jason told Sydney's Sun-Herald newspaper that Warne was considering retiring after the 2006-07 Ashes series in Australia to spend more time with his family.

"The Ashes in 2006-07 could be Shane's last series," Jason said. "He's mentioned that during talks we've had about when he might retire.

"He's still really enjoying test match cricket but that is a date he's talked about.

"If he didn't have kids, he might play forever, but he misses them a lot these days."

Should Warne retire after the 2006-07 Ashes series, his final Test would be at the Sydney Cricket Ground where he made his Test debut against India in 1992.

Warne holds the world record for Test wickets at 583 and could expect to finish with around 700 if he maintained form and stayed injury-free.

Jason said his brother was also toying with the idea of making a comeback in one-day internationals to play at the 2007 World Cup in West Indies.

The World Cup, the game's showpiece event, takes place a few months after the 2006-07 Ashes series and would signal the end of Warne's international career in all forms of the game.

The Australian said he would retire from one-day cricket after the 2003 World Cup in South Africa but never got to play in the tournament, which Australia won, after failing a drugs test. He has not played a one-day international since then.

"If the World Cup is coming around and the side doesn't have a permanent leg spinner he could make himself available ... it's a possibility," added Jason.

One of five players named as Wisden's cricketers of the 20th century for revitalising the art of leg spin, Warne is captaining English county side Hampshire this season.
