Pakistan heading for new challenge

Biswajyoti Brahma | May 02, 2005 19:44 IST

Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul Haq does not want to sit on past laurels.

After leading exceptionally well in India in the recent Test as well as one-day series, the 35-year-old has now put his eyes on the upcoming challenge - a series against the West Indies in the Caribbeans starting later this month.

Inzamam, who is in Abu Dhabi to take part in the tsunami relief tournament, said his side was focussed on doing well against the West Indies.

"It was a nice feeling after coming home from the India series. The reception we got was fabulous and all enjoyed it. But now it's a thing of the past," Inzamam said on Monday.

"Now we have the series against West Indies and we are looking forward to it. We have to work hard, focus on our game and do the planning for the new challenge."

With just a few days left for the series, Pakistan was taking the matches against teams from India and Sri Lanka in the triangular contest here as preparations.

"This will definitely be a good contest. Sri Lanka is a good team and India has also some very good players. The two matches we play here will definitely help us," he said.

When Pakistan tour the Caribbean, they would be without their strike bowlers Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammed Sami, both of whom are out due to fitness problems and Inzamam said their absence would be felt.

"Of course we will be missing the fast bowlers. But Shabbir Ahmed is fit and so is Umar Gul. Though Gul has not played any competitive cricket for long, we have to be careful while dealing with him," he said.

"Anyway, Sami is expected to be regain full fitness in two to three weeks and may even join the team in the West Indies," he said.
