Harmison seeks return of ruthless streak

For England, the first Test against Bangladesh will not be about winning. It will be about the taking apart.

Only a thumping victory will do at Lord's, preferably with strike bowler Steve Harmison to the fore.

Stand Harmison back-to-back with most Bangladeshi batsmen and he towers above them like man over boy. The image is a perfect one for the two-Test series starting at Lord's on Thursday.

Bangladeshi cricketers, like many of their Asian counterparts, are not designed for damp English May mornings. It is never easy to play the game enveloped in 12 jumpers and ski gloves.

Their coach, Dav Whatmore, will limit his goals to competing session by session and, with luck and a little rain, to reaching the fifth day. England, with the Ashes to follow, will want a quick kill and Monday off.

A match-winning performance from Harmison -- as conjured up in Dhaka in his only previous game against Bangladesh in late 2003 -- plus an incident-free rehabilitation for all rounder Andrew Flintoff following ankle surgery will top England's wish list.

The odd run for captain Michael Vaughan, Marcus Trescothick and Andrew Strauss, all misfiring at the moment, would not go amiss either.

Harmison, though, must be at his best if England are to test Australia. The world's number-one ranked bowler when England set off for South Africa in December, he ended that tour bereft of line, length and rhythm.

"I think my confidence did need building up a bit after South Africa although I didn't feel it was all doom and gloom," Harmison told reporters. "The rub of the green did not go my way, with a few catches and a few decisions."

He arrives at Lord's, however, in good form for his county Durham.

"Hopefully, that's my blip out of the way. I feel everything I've done this summer has gone up a notch. I haven't changed anything a great deal. I've just gone away and looked at the areas I was bowling in.

"I've bowled a bit fuller...but there hasn't been a massive change technically. I don't take much notice of the rankings, to be honest, but I think I can get up there again. What I'm looking for is consistency."

SINGLE VICTORY

When Harmison is consistent, as Vaughan knows only too well, England tend to win. His bowling was the cornerstone of last year's series triumphs over West Indies (3-0 away, 4-0 at home) and New Zealand (3-0 at home) as Vaughan's team rose to second in the rankings.

Bangladesh, still taking their first steps as a Test nation, have been consistent in defeat but the performance graph is pointing slowly upwards. Their one victory in 36 Tests came against Zimbabwe in January, followed immediately by a first one-day series success.

The tour warm-up matches, though, have not offered Whatmore much solace, particularly during the innings-and-226-run defeat by a second-string Sussex side, although 16-year-old Mushfiqur Rahim's century against Northamptonshire was a pleasant bonus.

The 21-year-old right-arm quick Mashrafe Mortaza and Enamul Haque jnr, still only 18 and a left-arm spinner of genuine promise, have yet to shine as the side makes its Lord's debut.

They should not count too much on English complacency.

"I think I can unsettle their batsmen like I did in Bangladesh. England's a difficult place to play, at this time of year, with the pitches doing a bit," added Harmison. "I think they've been finding things a bit tough early on and hopefully we can exploit that.

"It's a Test match at Lord's. It doesn't matter who you are playing against, whether it's Bangladesh or Australia, your preparation and mindset have to be the same.

"I think we have to be ruthless, over both Test matches -- that's the big thing."

England squad: Michael Vaughan (captain), Marcus Trescothick, Andrew Strauss, Graham Thorpe, Ian Bell, Andrew Flintoff, Geraint Jones (wicketkeeper), Ashley Giles, Matthew Hoggard, Steve Harmison, Simon Jones, Jon Lewis, Gareth Batty.
