PCB questions Inzamam dismissal

November 22, 2005 18:07 IST

In a clear indication that Inzamam-ul Haq's controversial run out has not gone down well with the Board, the PCB has raised the issue with ICC Chairman Ehsan Mani.

In a release in Lahore on Tuesday, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Director, Board Operations Abbas Zaidi informed that the issue was brought to match referee Roshan Mahanama's attention in writing by coach Bob Woolmer while PCB Chairman Shaharyar Khan had a telephonic conversation with Mr. Mani immediately after the incident.

Batting on 109, Inzamam had driven a ball back to England pacer Steve Harmison who threw the ball at the stumps and the burly Pakistan skipper, who was well within the crease, took an evasive action during which he lifted his rear leg and the throw hit the stumps.

Citing law No.38(2) which states a batsman is not run out if he has been within his ground and has subsequently left it to avoid injury when the wicket is put down, Mr Zaidi said, "Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has conveyed its concern to the International Cricket Council (ICC) regarding the apparently unlawful dismissal of Inzamam-ul Haq on the second day of the Bank Alfalah Cup Test match at Faisalabad.

"It is evident that Inzamam took evasive action to avoid injury and according to the laws should not have been given out," he added.

Meanwhile, the Board has also decided to probe into the pitch damaging issue which saw Shahid Afridi being slapped with a ban for one Test and two ODI matches.

"As regards Shahid Afridi's scuffing of the pitch for which he has apologised and for which he has been penalised by the match referee, the PCB will hold its own independent inquiry after the Test match," Mr Zaidi added.
