Australia elect to bat in first ODI

Australia captain Ricky Ponting won the toss and elected to bat in the first of three one-day internationals at Docklands Stadium on Wednesday.

Simon Katich will open the batting with Adam Gilchrist in a new partnership after Australian selectors dropped Matthew Hayden from the one-day side.

Victoria state captain Cameron White, rushed into the side after all rounder Brad Hogg was ruled out with a knee injury, was named as 12th man, though under experimental rules can be tactically substituted during the match.

Pakistan all rounder Shahid Afridi, one of three spinners in the World XI, is the 12th man for his side.

Australia: Ricky Ponting (captain), Adam Gilchrist, Simon Katich, Damien Martyn, Michael Clarke, Michael Hussey, Andrew Symonds, Shane Watson, Brett Lee, Nathan Bracken, Glenn McGrath, Cameron White (12th man/super sub)

World XI: Shaun Pollock (captain), Virender Sehwag, Kumar Sangakkara, Rahul Dravid, Brian Lara, Jacques Kallis, Kevin Pietersen, Andrew Flintoff, Daniel Vettori, Muttiah Muralitharan, Shoaib Akhtar, Shahid Afridi (12th man/super sub).
