Croft outshines Warne

September 17, 2005 12:44 IST

Aussie leg spin ace Shane Warne was outshone by former England spinner Robert Croft on his return to County cricket on Friday.

Croft bagged five wickets as relegated Glamorgan bowled out Hampshire for 350 at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff in the first division following a washed out first day.

Warne, who took 40 wickets in the series against England, scored 24 runs while teammate Simon Katich added 50.

Opener James Adams contributed 71 for Warne's team, while Dimitri Mascarenhas smashed 67 from 62 balls.

Dan Cherry's second-ball dismissal was not the way Glamorgan wanted to begin their reply, and they reached the close on 13 for one, having survived two Warne overs.

Neil Dexter scored  a half century on debut as Nottinghamshire's surge towards the title was held up on day three at Canterbury.

Notts require victory and 21 points to be confirmed as unassailable leaders and when Kent slumped to 108 for five, responding to 486 for eight, they looked well on track to make short work of the home side.

But after Johannesburg-born 21-year-old Dexter (79 no) and young Irish wicketkeeper Niall O'Brien (56 no) had shared an unbroken stand of 129, the equation was not so favourable for Notts with the hosts on 237 for five by stumps, meaning the hosts must lose 15 wickets today for the championship to be decided.
