Australia chief selector quits

April 04, 2006 11:11 IST

Australia's chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns announced on Tuesday he was quitting to concentrate on business interests.

Cricket Australia said they had not appointed a successor but a replacement would be found soon. Andrew Hilditch, Merv Hughes and David Boon are the other selectors.

Hohns, who had served as a national selector since 1993 and as chairman since 1996, said his decision had been prompted by the imminent retirement of his business partner.

"My business interests are now at the stage that they are going to require more of my attention and for this reason alone I have made the decision to move on," Hohns said in a statement.

"I have been fortunate to play a part in the National Selection Panel for so long and am very grateful for the opportunity that was afforded to me by the Cricket Australia Board.

"Despite its obvious challenges, I have certainly enjoyed the role and can only hope that my contribution has in some small way assisted Australian cricket."

Cricket Australia Chairman Creagh O'Connor paid tribute to Hohns.

"Trevor has fulfilled one of Australian cricket's most important roles in what has been one of the most successful eras in our history," O'Connor said.

"He has made an outstanding contribution to the role and has played a pivotal part in helping Australia remain the number one test and one-day international team in world cricket over a sustained period."

Sub: Trevor Hohns did a fine job for CA.

The report says the chief selector is quitting the post to concentrate on his business priorities. What a shining example for others in similar predicaments ...
