Hirwani announces retirement

February 05, 2006 18:20 IST

Leg-spinner Narendra Hirwani on Sunday announced his retirement from first class cricket after spinning the ball for nearly 23 years.

"I am taking retirement from the first class cricket. I am specially thankful to the national selector Sanjay Jagdale, my parents, my wife and to the people of Indore for their support and encouragement, which I have received during my nearly 23 years of career in first class, Tests and one-day international matches," Hirwani told reporters in Indore.

Hirwani's Test career began with a bang against West Indies in 1987-88 at Chennai in which he took record 16 wickets and followed that up with another 20 wickets in the next three Tests.

The leg-spinner's one-day career also began at the same time against West Indies from Gwalior where he claimed four wickets to prove his talent.

Hirwani played a total of 17 Tests and claimed 66 wickets, while in one-day internationals he claimed 23 wickets in 18 matches. In the first-class cricket, Hirwani played 167 matches and claimed 732 wickets.

The leg-spinner plans to set up an academy in Indore exclusively for grooming leg-spinners and has urged the Madhya Pradesh government to provide necessary help in this regard.

When asked whether injustice has been done with him as he was shunting in and out of the Indian team quite frequently, he said the selection and omission are the domain of the team management and added that "injustice is the part of the life".
