Sri Lanka survive third day

May 14, 2006 00:45 IST

Sri Lanka averted defeat within three days at Lord's on Saturday after being forced to follow on in the first test against England.

Scorecard: Eng v SL, 1st Test

At the close Sri Lanka, who scored 192 in their first innings, were 183 for three in reply to England's 551 for six declared.

Matthew Hoggard was the day's hero, taking four for 27 in the Sri Lankan first innings and becoming the 10th England player to reach 200 test wickets.

Hoggard took another early wicket when Sri Lanka batted again after lunch before Upul Tharanga (52) and Kumar Sangakkera (65) steaded the innings with a second-wicket partnership of 109.
