Andhra fall four runs short of victory

January 05, 2007 20:10 IST

In a match of oscillating fortunes, Delhi logged two points by virtue of their first innings lead whereas Andhra fell short of the victory target by four runs on the final day of the Super League Group A Ranji Trophy match in Vijayawada on Friday.

Delhi scored 355 and bowled Andhra out for 209 to gain a first innings lead of 146. But the match turned interesting when the visitors declared their second innings at 186 for four, setting the hosts a victory target of 333.

Andhra took up the challenge and gave good chase, but fell short of a memorable win as they could manage just 329 for nine at stumps.

Resuming at 160 for three, Delhi made a sporting declaration after Mithun Manhas completed his century. Manhas' century came off 112 balls with 10 hits to the fence and one mighty six.

Chasing a target of 333, Andhra stumbled at start and were reduced to 50 for four but former Test star M S K Prasad (33) led a comeback and stabilised the innings with RV Ch Prasad (42).

K S Shabuddin raised the hopes of a victory by hitting a brilliant 95, which included six fours and two sixes, while Md Faiq kept up the tempo by notching a neat 47.

The hard-hitting Kalyankrishna, who remained unbeaten on 40 with seven hits to the fence, however, could not help his side emerge triumphant.
