Sharma to replace Munaf in Bangladesh

May 18, 2007 12:52 IST

The Indian pace line-up on Friday suffered another blow as Munaf Patel was ruled out of the Bangladesh Test series with a back injury.

Delhi's Ishant Sharma will replace the Maharashtra bowler in the squad for the second Test against Bangladesh, starting May 25.

"Munaf Patel has been declared unfit with pain in the lower back," Board of Control for Cricket in India secretary Niranjan Shah said in a statement.

"The team management has decided to send Munaf back and they have requested a replacement for him. The chairman of selection committee, Mr Dilip Vengsarkar, in consultation with his colleagues has decided to send young Ishant Sharma to reinforce the team.," Shah added in the statement.

The 18-year-old Sharma made his first class debut for Delhi last season and finished with 29 wickets from six matches, including a five-wicket haul against Baroda.

He also toured England and Pakistan with the India Under-19 team.
