The reasons behind the mysterious suspension of Chris Cairns and Dinesh Mongia from the Indian Cricket League will unravel in the next couple of weeks, ICL Executive Board chairman Kapil Dev said.

The celebrated New Zealand all-rounder and Mongia, who were playing for Chandigarh Lions, were suspended on "disciplinary grounds" but the ICL did not elaborate on the exact reasons for their ouster.

Cairns left for Dubai soon after and Mongia has maintained stoic silence on the issue.

Kapil said the matter is being investigated amid whispers that betting is gaining ground in the rebel league, which is not under the International Cricket Council's anti-corruption unit's jurisdiction.

"There is an investigation underway and the board will declare its findings in a couple of weeks," Kapil told The Daily Telegraph.

The newspaper also quoted an ICL source as saying that the duo had broken the terms of their contract by "failing to declare injuries".

Former England player Tony Greig, who is on ICL's Executive Board, played down reports of corruption. "Corruption in cricket is an ongoing issue and it bothers me now more than ever before. The Twenty20 format is more vulnerable to corruption than any other form of the game.

"The ICC and cricket in general needs to be even more proactive with its anti-corruption programme and should be increasing dramatically the resources it commits to it," he said.

An unnamed ICL player told the newspaper that he was witness to some "questionable incidents" in the league. "The people who run the ICL have to decide how much they can come out and say, or whether it will destroy the whole tournament. Where does it all end?" he said.
