Bankmen to protest for higher wages

Over a million employees and officers of the United Forum of Bank Unions will observe a one-day token strike on September 18, following failure of talks of the Officers Organistaion and workmen unions with the Indian Banks' Association over wage revision.

This was announced by the United Forum of Bank Unions since the IBA decided to stick to its decision of salary settlement in basic and dearness allowances and left the other allowances like HRA and CCA to the discrimination of the individual bank-level settlement.

Bankmen unions, on the other hand, had insisted for a comprehensive settlement for all workers at the industry level.

The forum which consists of various unions like the All India Bank Employees Association, All India Bank Officers Association, All India Bank Officers Confederation, National Confederation of Bank Employees, Indian National Bank Officers Confederation, Indian National Bank Employees Federation and others rejected the partial settlement suggested by the IBA.

The two parties were holding meetings and discussions over the issue for the last six months, this being the third meeting which failed in Bombay on Wednesday. The forum has decided to hold a strike on September 18 and a preparatory programme will be sketched on August 24, September 11 and 17.
