Patents bill fiasco pushes down Sensex by 14 points

BSE Sensitive Index

Opening on a firm note, equities suffered a moderate setback at the Bombay Stock Exchange towards the fag end of Tuesday's session. This was following profit-taking and selling pressure from bull operators following the postponement in passing the Patent Amendment Bill today.

Reflecting the trend, the 30-scrip BSE Sensex opened at 2987.31 points, crossed the psychological barrier of 3000 points to touch the day's high of 3016.91 points, but it suddenly came down to touch the day's low of 2961.73 and closed at 2962.50 points, showing a net loss of 14.08 points from the previous close of 2976.58 points.

The broad-based BSE-100 index eased by 2.17 points to 1314.04 points from the previous close of 1317.01 points.

Petrochem major Reliance, market leader ITC, Satyam Comp, Tisco, Raymond, Parke Davis registered moderate to sharp decline while Voltas, Tata Tea, Pentafour Soft, Zodiac, Citicorp, Lakme, Madras Aluminium, and National Peroxide reported significant gains during the day.
