Work starts on Rs 8 billion power project in Andhra

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has laid the foundation stone for a naphtha/gas-based Rs 8 billion power project near Samalkota, near Kakinada. Naidu said Rs 30 billion would be spent on generation and distribution of power in the state during the next few years.

The 200 MW project, jointly taken up by the Bombay Suburban Electric Supply and several private companies in the state, would be completed in 18 months.

Naidu told the gathering at Samalkota that Andhra Pradesh had achieved 85 per cent self-sufficiency in power generation and it would be in a position to meet the power demands of the domestic and agricultural sectors in the next one year.

State Electricity Board Chairman J Parthasarathy said power projects for generation of 4000 MW would be set up in Visakhapatnam and East and West Godavari districts in the next three to four years. An amount of Rs 600 million would be spent on transmission and distribution in the East and West Godavari districts next year, he added.

Earlier, distributing loans worth Rs 8.5 million to 402 women self-help groups at a function, Naidu said women would be provided reservation in the state assembly after the passage of the Women's Reservation Bill, to be introduced in the Lok Sabha today.
