An uptrend was witnessed on the National Stock Exchange today, in spite of political uncertainty following Bharatiya Janata Party's defeat in the state assembly elections. Equities opened on a weak note, moved in a narrow range and firmed up towards the end of the trading session.

S&P CNX Nifty opened at 808.60, touched the day's high of 817.75, fell to the day's low of 800.10 before closing at 817.75, showing a net gain of 6.90 points from the previous close of 810.85.

CNX Nifty Junior ended higher by 10.50 points at 1379.50, S&P CNX Defty closed at 665.25, exhibiting a rise of 5.60 points, while S&P CNX 500 and CNX Midcap 200 rose by 4.92 points and 2.98 points to 561.90 and 504.29 respectively.

The total turnover reported on the NSE was Rs 12.92 billion from trading in 51.7 million shares in 176,772 trades and debenture traded value was Rs 3.34 million. In all, 425 scrips advanced, 408 declined and 112 were unchanged. And 16 securities hit their price bands today.

Satyam Computer topped the turnover list with Rs 2.63 billion followed by ITC (Rs 2.26 billion), Pentafour Software (Rs 1.74 billion), Zee Telefilms (Rs 1.09 billion) and Reliance (Rs 625.9 million). Others that recorded a high turnover were Telco, SBi, Silverline, Castrol, ACC, Tata Tea, Software Solutions Integrated and HCL-HP.

The top gainers were Gujarat Ambuja, Telco, Great Eastern Shipping, NIIT and Grasim. Prominent shares that shed value were Tata Chemicals, HPCL, East India Hotels, HDFC and Cochin Refineries. The foreign institutional investors were net buyers to the tune of Rs 84.4 million, while domestic institutional investors and mutual funds bought shares of a net amount of Rs 26.6 million.
