No plan to tax farm income in Budget, clarifies BJP

Email this report to a friend

The Bharatiya Janata Party is against imposing any tax on agricultural income and the government has no such proposal.

This was stated by party general secretary M Venkaiah Naidu in New Delhi on Tuesday. He said media reports about the said tax were speculative. He said he had verified the facts with Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha who has said there was no such proposal at all.

Naidu said the party was of the view that agricultural production was dependent on vagaries of nature. If one year farmers have a good crop, next year the crop may be damaged in some natural calamity like floods and drought.

There had been the practice not to tax agricultural income and the BJP also held the same view, he clarified.
