Dull trading keeps rupee range-bound; Rs 43.21 to US $

The Indian rupee ended marginally lower by one paise against the greenback at Rs 43.21/22 in a dull interbank foreign exchange market today.

The Indian unit opened a bit higher at Rs 43.1900/1950, later eased slightly on corporate dollar demand and ended at Rs 43.21/22, a paise lower from the previous close of Rs 43.20/21.

Dealers said the market continued to be dull with nominal activities and the rupee witnessed just two paise movement throughout the day.

The forward market also witnessed nominal activities and premia eased further on scattered receivings. Importers were covering only urgent requiremnets in view of the rupee's stability after the conflict at border was over, dealers said.

The sixth-month and yearly annualised premia ended further lower at 4.29 per cent and 4.71 per cent respectively as compared to 4.30 per cent and 4.77 per cent of the previous day's close.

Meanwhile, the Reserve Bank of India fixed the reference rate for US dollar at Rs 43.20 as against Rs 43.22 of the previous day.

The rupee ended weaker against pound sterling and Japanese yen while it remained steady against euro. It ended against the pound sterling at Rs 67.97 (67.31), yen at Rs 36.53 (36.02) and euro at Rs 44.84 (44.83).

In the domestic money market, the call rates ruled easy on comfortable liquidity and ended marginally lower at 8.00-8.25 per cent as compared to 8.20-8.40 0er cent of the previous day's close.
