Equities move in narrow range; Nifty steady at 1191.30

Equities traded in a thin range and ended almost steady at the National Stock Exchange today.

The S&P CNX Nifty declined by 0.90 points to 1191.30 from the previous close of 1192.20. Opening at 1192.20, the index witnessed a high of 1198.70 and a low of 1185.30.

The CNX Nifty Junior Index rose by 4.40 points to end at 1954.70. S&P CNX Defty eased by 0.70 points to 951.95. S&P CNX-500 fell by 0.20 points to close at 0.20 points, while CNX Midcap-200 rose by 1.65 points to end at 693.45.

A total of 465 scrips advanced, 539 declined and 84 were unchanged. 29 scrips hit their price bands.

The total traded value on the NSE was Rs 17.72 billion from trading in 86 million shares. The debenture traded were valued at Rs 479.4 million. Pentafour Software topped the turnover list with Rs 2.29 billion followed by Reliance (Rs 1.74 billion), Satyam Computers (Rs 1.74 billion), SBI (Rs 1.67 billion) and Ranbaxy (Rs 1.43 billion).

Others that recorded a high turnover were ITC, Silverline, Zee Telefilms, L&T, Telco, Digital Equipment, Tisco and BPL.

The top S&P CNX Nifty gainers were Smithkline, Tata Chemicals, Bank of India, HLL and SBI. Prominent among those that shed value were Indian Rayon, ABB, ICICI, Reliance Petroleum and Bajaj Auto.
