Sept poll move hits bulls' eye: Sensex up 125 points to 3502.95

BSE Sensitive Index

A bullish fervour prevailed at the Bombay Stock Exchange today as foreign institutional investors aided positive sentiments by extending heavy buying support in index counters.

The BSE-30 Sensitive Index (Sensex) ended 124.55 points higher at 3502.95. Incidentally, this was the day's high, while the opening level of 3381.63 was the day's low.

Some marketmen attributed today's rise to lifting of the cloud of political uncertainty as news of the Election Commission's decision to hold general elections in September trickled in the dying moments of today's trading, which aided the uptrend.

Marketmen informed that foreign institutional investors bought L&T, Gujarat Ambuja, Tisco, Reliance, Satyam Computers, Pentafour Software and Zee Telefilms. According to them, a leading American fund bought Rs 1.07 billion of the Satyam stock. Consequently, Satyam jumped up by Rs 88 to end the day at Rs 1,189.

Mirroring the uptrend, the BSE-100 index rose by 57.26 points to 1535.71 as against the last closing of 1478.45. The BSE-200 index ended at 349.51, marking an increase of 12.22 points over the previous close of 337.29.

The Dollex index closed 4.86 points higher at 136.12 from the last closing of 131.26.

The rise in Sensex was reflected in individual scrips. Reliance ended at Rs 141, Zee at Rs 1,411, Pentafour at 1,078 and Tisco at Rs 96.

The total turnover on the BOLT network was Rs 16.39 billion from trading in 58.8 million shares.

Pentafour Software topped the turnover list with Rs 2.20 billion followed by Satyam Computers (Rs 1.56 billion), ITC (Rs 1.47 billion), Zee Telefilms (Rs 1.47 billion) and Reliance (Rs 1.32 billion). Others that recorded a high turnover were Ranbaxy, SBI, Digital Equipment, L&T, Infosys, BPL, Tisco, Tata Tea, Glaxo and Telco.
