Equities stage a smart rally; Nifty up 38 points to 1008.35

Share prices staged a smart rally on good buying support by bull operators and financial institutions on the last day of the current settlement at the National Stock Exchange today.

Pivotals opened on a positive note, continued its uptrend on sustained good buying interest and ended with smart gains.

Mirroring the bullish trend, the S&P CNX Nifty opened higher at 971.90 points, crossed the 1000-mark and closed at 1008.35 points, gaining 37.60 points from 970.75 points of the previous day.

The CNX Nifty Junior shot up by 72 points to 1862.75 from 1790.75 while the S&P CNX Defty rose by 30.70 points to 817.40 points. The S&P CNX 500 appreciated by 26.69 points to 702.94 points and CNX Midcap 200 jumped up by 21.75 points to 620.59 points from 598.84 points of the previous day.

The total turnover, involving 64.63 million shares in 237,948 trades, was Rs 16.87 billion and the debentures traded were valued at Rs 4.17 million.

Today, about 650 shares advanced, 321 declined, 79 remained unchanged while 83 securities hit their price bands today.

The top S&P CNX Nifty gainers were: IFCI who shot up by 9.50 per cent to Rs 13.25 from 12.10, ICICI 8.03 per cent to Rs 53.80 (49.80), Reliance 8.03 per cent to Rs 145.25 (134.45), SBI 8.01 per cent to Rs 169.15 (Rs 156.60) and Telco 8 per cent to Rs 145.80 (135).

The top losers were: Cipla which eased by 2.80 per cent to Rs 1321 (1359), Grasim 2.07 per cent to Rs 118 (120.50), Smithline 1.71 per cent to Rs 582.05 (592.15) and Indian Hotel Company 0.71 per cent to Rs 281 (283).

Pentafour Software registered the highest turnover of Rs 2.65 billion, followed by Satyam Computer Rs 1.73 billion, ITC Rs 1.44 billion, Ranbaxy Rs 1.11 billion, Reliance Rs 1.04 billion, Zee Telefilms Rs 1.01 billion, SBI Rs 734.2 million, Silverline Rs 518.6 million, L&T Rs 458 million, BPL 417.4 million, Digital Equipment Rs 415.6 million, HCL HP Rs 385.3 million and Rolta 353.7 million.

The other actively traded counters were: ACC Rs 271.4 million, Tisco Rs 224.9 million, Square D Software Rs 215 million, Tata Tea Rs 195 million, Infosys Technologies and Dr Reddy's Rs 195 million each. UNI
