India must study Britain's privatisation model, says Cook

Although India has to choose its own model of privatisation, it can learn from the experiences of Britain, England's Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwhealth Affairs Robin Cook said in New Delhi today.

The privatisation process in Britain was not an easy one and some of the changes involved short-term social costs, including job losses, Cook said while addressing a seminar on privatisation, organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry.

However, looking at the longer term, employment in some of the privatised industries rose after an initial fall, while in others fall in employment was more than compensated by new opportunities.

Through the privatisation process in Britain, it was possible to generate 800,000 more jobs in the last three years, he said.

''I believe the skills that we have developed could prove invalueable to India in its privatisation process,'' he added.
