The US is keeping a close watch on the developments in the IT sector in West Bengal, which has just witnessed the formation of an union affiliated to the Centre of Indian Trade Unions.

Principal Commercial Officer with the US Consul General Aileen Crowe Nandi said that US investors were being apprised of the developments in the IT sector in Kolkata.

Referring to the proposed nationwide December 14 strike called by the Left-affiliated organisations, she said it needed to be seen whether the IT sector was included.

Crowe said at the meeting organised by the Calcutta Chamber of Commerce in Kolkata on Friday that there was a need to improve the image of West Bengal in the mind of US investors.

She said out of the 70-odd US companies which would visit different cities of the country during November and December this year, only three would come to West Bengal.

Crowe said while 26 and 18 American firms would visit Delhi and Bangalore respectively, the number for the state was insignificant. According to her, this was due to the perception of US investors about West Bengal.
