Sunny Deol
Karz or Curse?
12 home truths on Karz: The Burden of Truth

Sukanya Verma

Truth # 1: I like Sunny Deol and Suniel Shetty.

Truth # 2: Despite their dual presence, I didn't like Karz-The Burden of Truth.

Truth # 3: Surprise, surprise, Sunny isn't his usual savior-of-the-world self. Instead he switches into a melancholic, maternal love deprived, drunken poet.

Truth # 4: His subdued avatar doesn't last long. Post-interval, he reverts back to kicking ass by the dozen. Going by my calculation, he grants six punches per villain. An estimated 63 become a target of his uncontrolled fury.

Total=378 punches.

Truth # 5: Suniel Shetty doesn't convince as a roving-eyed Romeo. Also, he looks out of place as Sunny's spoilt brat kid brother.

Truth # 6: Unlike the misleading promos on television that suggest Karz is a love triangle between two brothers and their common dream girl --- Shilpa Shetty, the film is about an abandoned boy yearning for his mother's affections. The triangle is half-baked and unnecessary ploy to further establish Deol's merits as the sacrificing, golden-hearted dude.

Truth # 7: After playing Aishwarya Rai's boisterous mother in Devdas Kiron Kher plays mother goose to Sunny and Suniel. A flashback reveals that Sumitra Devi (Kher) was raped by Yuvraj aka Thakur (Ashutosh Rana) and Sunny is the outcome of that crime. Since Sunny reminds him of her ugly past, she detests the poor guy, forsaking him to be brought up by another family.

Truth # 8: The makers -- director Harry Baweja (Dilwale, Diljale), screenplay Anees Bazmee (Deewangee) --- introduce explicitly vulgar and titillating sequences to establish Rana's character as a testosterone driven maniac. He is shown lustfully eyeing female reporters, picturing them semi-naked. The rest of his fantasy is anybody's good guess.

Truth # 9: A good moment is when Sunny breaks down on the phone while talking to his mother. He isn't known for tugging the heartstrings, but he manages to convey tender emotions suitably in the scene.Suniel Shetty and Shilpa Shetty in Karz: The Burden of Truth

Truth # 10: Dressed in trendy Neeta Lulla creations and a beaming smile, Shilpa Shetty sizzles in a brief role.

Truth # 11: Continuity glitches and unbelievable scripts are a part and parcel of tinsel town. Yet I cannot resist observing how Dharampur, where the premise of Karz is set, looks incredibly similar to New Zealand, Film City, Hiranandani Gardens and Kulu Manali.

Truth # 12: This 17-reel painfully (pun intended) lengthy film leaves you with stiff limbs and sore eyes. In a nutshell, Karz: The Burden of Truth stands true to its title.
