Agni II will kick off arms race, warns China

E-Mail this report to a friend

China today renewed its criticism against India for testing a medium-range ballistic missile said to be capable of reaching the Chinese capital.

Foreign ministry spokesman Sun Yuxi blasted the test as a violation of United Nations resolutions and said India would be responsible for triggering a renewed arms race in South Asia.

Sun refused to comment directly on reports that Pakistan was planning to respond by test-firing its own missile tomorrow.

''We hope the relevant countries can observe the UN Security Council resolution 1172. We do not wish to see a missile race in South Asia,'' Sun told a regular news briefing.

''China attaches importance to improving relations with India and was ready to do so. At the same time we have taken note of the Indian prime minister's comments that this test is not directed at any country,'' Sun said.
