50 forest personnel to assist STF
in nabbing Veerappan: PTI

The forest department has deputed 50 personnel to assist the Special Task Force and Border Security Force in nabbing the outlaw Veerappan, Tamil Nadu Forest Minister Dorai Murugan said in Coimbatore on Tuesday.

The minister told reporters the STF had asked the department to depute some personnel to assist in the operations, mainly to show them the way into the deep jungles.

Saying that the department had originally sent 70 officials for the task, Murugan said that after screening, 50 were selected, while the others were kept as reserve.

When asked on the coordination between forest officials and STF, K K Somasundaram, principal chief conservator of forests, said that it was going on well. "That was why they had requested us to send some personnel," he said.

On grievances of forest officials, who had assisted the force earlier, Murugan said the department had assured the officials that all benefits, including risk and duty allowances, provided to police personnel would be extended to them.

On expected damage to flora and fauna, considering movement of many of them, the minister said that it would be minimal.
