India seeks China's support for anti-terrorism resolution

E-Mail this report to a friend

India has sought China's support on its resolution on terrorism, which it has placed with the United Nations, as both nations underlined the need for global co-operation to fight the growing menace.

Acknowledging that narco-terrorism and terrorism were intertwined and posed a threat to governments world-wide, Chinese legislator Li Peng and visiting Deputy Rajya Sabha chairperson Najma Heptullah agreed that all nations must co-operate to fight the common danger.

Heptullah, on a five-day official goodwill visit to China as president of the Council of Inter-Parliamentary Union, said India had placed a resolution with the UN on terrorism and hoped that China, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, would support it.

Li, chairman of the standing committee of the National People's Congress, China's Parliament, said China was opposed to all forms of terrorism.

The two also discussed a wide range of bilateral and multilateral issues of common concern during their one-hour meeting at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing yesterday.

Heptullah told PTI that she was "extremely happy" with the outcome of her meeting with Li, ranked second in the ruling Chinese Communist party hierarchy, and the goodwill that exists in Beijing, especially after the recent state visit to China by President K R Narayanan.
