Lanka requested India for help: Jaswant

External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh today said India had received 'some request' from the Sri Lankan government regarding the present situation and which was being considered by the Government of India.

Yesterday evening, in his address to the media, Singh had declared that Sri Lanka had not sought any assistance, military or humanitarian so far.

The external affairs minister also asserted India will strive for a negotiated peaceful resolution to the conflict within the island nation's sovereign and territorial integrity.

Addressing both houses of Parliament, Jaswant Singh said the recent developments in northern Lanka were a matter of deep concern to India and that India was monitoring the situation. He said the Sri Lanka government was in touch with the Government of India.

"Our high commissioner to Sri Lanka was, therefore, called to New Delhi earlier this week for consultation," the minister told the two houses.
