Nayaranan leaves for China on Sunday

President K R Narayanan leaves for China on a seven-day state visit on Sunday. He is expected to hold wide-ranging discussions, including talks on bilateral ties, with the top Chinese leadership during his three-day stay in the Chinese capital of Beijing.

The President will meet his counterpart Ziang Zemin, Prime Minister Zhu Rongji and chairman of the National People's Congress, Li Peng.

Besides Beijing, the President will visit the north coastal city of Dallian and Kuming before returning to India on June 3.

He will be accompanied by Union Minister for Heavy Industries Manohar Joshi and parliamentarians Somnath Chatterjee, Ramachandran Pillai (CPM) and Sushma Swaraj (BJP).

The Institute of Contemporary Chinese Studies has expressed the hope that Narayanan's visit will further strengthen relations between the two neighbours.

ICCS President Rajesh Saran, in a letter to Narayanan, recalled the President's successful stint as India's ambassador to Beijing till 1978.
