China to help Pak build strategic sea port

In a significant development, Beijing promised Islamabad on Wednesday all possible assistance to develop a strategic Gwadar deep sea port in southern Pakistan.

"Considering our friendship, China has made all-out efforts on the issue of the Gwadar port project," Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation Shi Guangsheng told the visiting Pakistani Minister for Communications Javed Ashraf.

Ashraf said the Gwadar port project symbolises the strategic cooperation between the two countries and will play an important role in Pakistan's domestic construction drive.

Shi described Pakistan as an 'all-weather' friend and said China attaches great importance to the consensus reached in the talks between leaders of the two countries and has carried out a series of follow-up actions for the planned project.

The project was decided by leaders of the two countries when Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji visited Pakistan last May, Xinhua said.
