In a series of simultaneous attacks on army camps in northeastern Sri Lanka on Thursday, Liberation of Tigers of Tamil Eelam guerrillas killed at least seven soldiers, losing at least eight of their cadres.
Air Force jets, meanwhile, destroyed a suspected LTTE base at Kandikudichaaru in the Thoppigala districts in the eastern Batticaloa district.
Military spokesman Sanath Karunaratne said the Kokkuthoduvai army camp, 17 km northwest of Pulmoddai, and another at Janakapura in the Weli Oya sector, came under heavy artillery and mortar fire from 3.30 am.
Artillery fire killed three soldiers in their trench, but a fierce counter-offensive helped the security forces take back two lost bunkers and kill eight rebels. Fifteen other militants were wounded in the confrontation, he said.
Seven armymen were killed and 11, including an officer, were wounded in the battle.
The latest rebel attack came just two days after the LTTE overran a police station in the eastern Ampara district on Tuesday morning, killing 23 persons and wounding 18 policemen.
