Veerappan gang member sustained
injuries in shootout

Special Task Force IG V Balachandran Friday confirmed that a member of Veerappan's gang had been injured in the exchange of fire in Sambandhikkadu forest area Friday last.

"Million per cent," he replied when asked if his men had actually identified Veerappan during the exchange of fire. He said the outlaw is holed up in the forests on the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border.

Balachandran was speaking to newspersons after he attended a meeting organised by the STF to enlist villagers' help to nab the bandit.

Posters with photographs of the five-member gang and contact numbers where information about the gang's movements could be given were distributed after the meeting.

Asked if publishing telephone numbers could be disadvantageous, as hoax calls had already started coming in, Balachandran said: "That is our business."
