Congress president Sonia Gandhi has put off her visit to China this week due to the death of her colleague Madhavrao Scindia, party sources said on Monday.
Gandhi decided not to go to Beijing, as her presence was considered necessary to help the party cope with the loss of Scindia, the party's deputy leader in the Lok Sabha who died in a plane crash on September 30, they said.
Fresh dates for the visit would be finalised after consultations with the Chinese authorities.
Gandhi was to lead a six-member delegation to China on Thursday. The delegation was to have included former finance minister Manmohan Singh and former minister of state for external affairs K Natwar Singh.
The visit had been organised by the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation at the invitation of former Chinese premier Li Peng, who is now the chairman of the National People's Congress.
