Army chief re-schedules visit to China

Army chief Gen S Padmanabhan, who put off his visit to China early in August, will now go to Beijing in September at the head of a high level delegation.

Padmanabhan will be the second service chief after former Air Chief Marshal A Y Tipnis to visit China. His visit comes ahead of the two countries moving towards exchange of crucial delineation maps of the eastern and western sectors of the Sino-Indian border.

High-level army sources said the exact date of the army chief's visit as well as his itinerary was being worked out. Padmanabhan will be meeting top officials of the People Liberation Army as well as members of China's all-powerful Military Commission.

Padmanabhan had recently stated that India's relations with China, notwithstanding the boundary dispute was much better with the two countries poised to build upon recent Confidence Building Measures.

He also said despite the boundary dispute, there had been no firing on the Sino-Indian border for the past decade.
