BJP leader demands Karnataka CM's resignation

Sadananda R in Chamarajanagar

Bharatiya Janata Party leader Jagadeesh Shettar on Saturday demanded the resignation of Karnataka Chief Minister S M Krishna and Home Minister Mallikarjuna Kharge over their "failure" to prevent the abduction of former state minister H Nagappa.

"It is shameful that Veerappan has kidnapped important persons twice [the first being matinee idol Rajakumar] in the regime of Mr S M Krishna. Now, he has to accept moral responsibility and step down... Same should be done by the home minister," he said.

He said the government should have taken steps to eradicate the Veerappan menace after the Rajakumar episode. Instead, they relaxed their approach, he added.

The government knew that Nagappa was on Veerappan's hitlist, he alleged.

Meanwhile, the Special Task Force picked up five supporters of Nagappa who were trying to enter the Sathyamangalam forest range to try and meet Veerappan and secure their leader's release. They were taken to Gundal camp for interrogation and later released.

Union Urban Development Minister Anantha Kumar visited Kamagere on Friday. He met the family members of Nagappa and assured them of the Centre's support to solve the crisis.
