Besides Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Jiang Zemin is also keen to bring India and Pakistan to the negotiating table to help ease the tension in South Asia.

A spokesman of the Chinese foreign ministry said that the resolution of the Kashmir problem was a pre-requisite to ensure peace between India and Pakistan and said China was prepared to play an active role in helping the two countries resolve the dispute peacefully.

President Jiang Zemin, in his address to the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) at Almaty and during his bilateral meetings wit other leaders, will spell out China's position on the issue, he said.

China hopes that the declaration to be issued by the CICA would also touch upon the tension.

Leaders from 16 Asian countries, including India and Pakistan, will attend the day-long summit on Tuesday.
