China Airlines jet crashes with 225 on board

A China Airlines Boeing 747 carrying 225 people on Saturday crashed off Taiwan during a routine flight to Hong Kong, Taiwan's Prime Minister Yu Shyi-kun said.

Among those on board were 206 passengers, including three children, and 19 crew members.

The plane crashed into the sea off the island of Penghu, about 50 km west of Taiwan, he said.

Helicopters, 10 coastguard and naval vessels are searching the waters for survivors, he said adding none have been found so far.

China Airlines said the Hong Kong-bound flight CI611 disappeared from radar screens at 1243 IST shortly after taking off from Taipei.
