China will not become another Soviet Union: CPI-M

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) politburo member V S Achutanandan has dismissed fears of China going the former Soviet Union way following the country's attempts to open up its economy.

The 16th Congress of the Communist Party of China in its closing session on November 14 in Beijing had unanimously approved a proposal to open membership to formerly reviled capitalist entrepreneurs.

In an article in the latest edition of CPI-M mouthpiece, Chintha, Achutanandan has said bourgeois media propaganda about China trying to embrace capitalism was aimed at confusing the people.

Achutanandan's analysis has come at a time when the party cadres were showing signs of disappointment over the politburo and central committee's failure to put the Chinese developments in the right perspective and explain their impact on the larger Communist movement.

"Granting party membership to select capitalists is a small step in a chain of events that have already taken place or are going to take place in the coming years in China's long journey to socialism. They indicate the Communist Party's unimpeded advancement," Achutanandan said.

"The proposal made by Zemin (former president Jiang Zemin) to accept capitalists, who would abide by the party's ideology, into the Communist fold was indicative of the resilience the party has achieved over the years," he added.

Achutanandan, however, warned about American attempts to weaken China. The merger of Hong Kong with China and the opposition to the move to merge Taiwan with China are part of the designs of the capitalist forces led by the USA, he said.
