Karnataka STF arrests Veerappan's associate

Sadananda R in Chamarajanagar

The Karnataka Special Task Force has arrested a close associate of Veerappan in Hanur block and recovered Rs 1.5 million from him.

Mara, a native of Dinnahalli village in Hanur, was said to be in touch with the forest brigand and during interrogation revealed the money belonged to Veerappan.

STF sources told rediff.com that Mara was arrested three days back and the money, in Rs 500 denomination, was hidden in an earthen pot.

After the release of the Kannada matinee idol Rajakumar, large cache of money hidden in the Sathyamangalam forest was recovered by the STF. On Monday, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa accused the Karnataka Chief Minister S M Krishna of paying a ransom of Rs 300 million to the forest brigand for the filmstar's release.

Meanwhile, Parimala Nagappa, wife of Veerappan's hostage, former Karnataka minister H Nagappa, will not be meeting Jayalalithaa on Tuesday as scheduled due to ill-health, her son Dr Preethan said.

Speaking to rediff.com Dr Preethan said his mother was suffering from fatigue and has been advised bed rest for two days.

"My mother is not seriously ill. She is under emotional stress and needs some rest," he said.
