Police on Tuesday night seized a huge stock of explosives from Borivali in north Mumbai and Thane district.

Acting on a tip-off, the police combed the area around the Western Express Highway at Borivali and seized a plastic bag containing six detonators and five gelatine sticks.

Investigations revealed that the explosives belonged to a quarry owner in Nagla Bunder in Thane.

With the assistance of the Thane (rural) police, a locality in Nagla Bunder was raided, which led to the discovery of 557 electric detonators, 238 ordinary detonators, 264 meters waterproof wires, 35 gelatine sticks and approximately 185 kg of ammonium nitrate, the police added.

A 34-year-old employee of the quarry was also arrested, the police said, adding a hunt for the quarry owner was on.
