Three motorcycle-borne men intruded into Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's convoy on Sunday night leaving security personnel red faced.

Vajpayee was returning to his Race Course Road residence after a visit to his dentist in Central Delhi's Khan Market, when three young men riding a black Yamaha motorcycle breached the security barricades at Subramaniya Bharati Marg at 2140 hours IST and joined the motorcade. The entire area had been sanitised just ten minutes before.

Delhi police sources said the motorcycle-borne men entered Subramanya Bharati Marg from the service lane of the Lok Nayak Bhawan, which houses government offices and is behind Khan Market.

The three -- Rinku, Ravi and Kishan -- are residents of Ranjit Nagar in West Delhi and in their twenties. They were arrested and interrogated by police and central intelligence agencies.

The men, said Delhi Police sources, were going to attend a marriage at Kotla Mubarakpur in South Delhi and were in a 'hurry'.

A traffic policeman, who tried to stop the motorcycle, was injured, the sources added. When the motorbike travelled ten metres into Subramaniya Bharati Marg, the security vehicle at the fag end of the Prime Minister's motorcade stopped it and nabbed the youths.

Senior officials of the Delhi Police, the Intelligence Bureau and the Special Protection Group held a late night meeting to review the prime minister's security measures after the breach.

This is the fourth time that a breach took place in the security of the prime minister's motorcade this year, the earlier instances having come in January. On two occasions in the past, a Maruti van had hit the pilot car of the prime minister's motorcade and then a Maruti Esteem car had moved 'dangerously close' to the convoy.
