The Ministry of Defence has ordered a one-man inquiry headed by a senior bureaucrat into the theft of computers from a Defence Research and Development Organisation installation in Delhi.
Additional Secretary Ranjit Issar will "review the existing security arrangements at the DRDO's Metcalfe House premises, probe the circumstances leading to the security lapse and fix responsibility," a MoD spokesman said.
This probe is in addition to the ongoing investigations by the Delhi police, intelligence agencies and the DRDO itself.
A Major General on deputation to the DRDO is carrying out the probe into the incident of theft. He is also reviewing the entire security apparatus around the research agency's installations all across the country.
The Intelligence Bureau and the Research and Analysis Wing are investigating the espionage angle to the theft.
The computers were stolen from the offices of the Scientific Analysis Group and the Institute for System Studies and Analysis, both based in Metcalfe House in north Delhi.
The MoD claims "no sensitive data related to the country's security was lost in the burglary." The two institutes are not "involved in encrypting communication or otherwise of India's nuclear command and control."
It claims the computers contained information on human resources development, libraries, some old war games and material downloaded from unclassified and open sources and papers published by scientists in journals, which are available to the public.
Some of the computers lost were also being used to access the Internet, it said.
