Police and paramilitary forces have been put on high alert in Jammu and Kashmir after receiving intelligence inputs that militants' plan major strikes on the Independence Day, senior security officials said on Wednesday.

"We have received inputs which suggest that militants are desperate to strike on the Independence Day to create panic, but we are equally adamant to foil their nefarious designs and ensure trouble-free celebrations," Deputy Inspector General of Border Security Force K Srinivasan told PTI in Srinagar.

Quoting intelligence reports and wireless intercepts, he said outfits including Lashkar-e-Tayiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed have focussed on disrupting the main function of August 15 to be held in Srinagar where Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed is to unfurl the national flag.

The militant leaders want their cadre to go for a suicide attack on the day, he said.
  
However, he said the BSF, police and Central Reserve Police Force have been assigned the job to "frustrate" the militants' plan. "We are leaving nothing to chance," he said.

Apprehending militant attacks, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Srinagar and Badgam districts, Mohammad Amin Shah said a multi-tier security net has been put in place at all vital installations, especially in and around Bakshi Stadium in Srinagar, the venue of the main function.

Meanwhile, official sources said special instructions on VVIP evacuation have been issued. Ambulances with mini bloodbanks and facility for carrying out minor surgeries would be kept ready, they added.
