Extremist violence in Jammu and Kashmir, the northeastern and naxal-affected states claimed the lives of 7,458 people during 2003-2004, the government informed the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.
Up to October 2004, 4,322 people, including civilians, security forces personnel and terrorists, were killed in 5,624 incidents in Jammu and Kashmir, 1,860 people were killed in 2,237 incidents in the northeastern states and 1,276 people were killed in 2,927 incidents in naxal-affected states, Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal said in a written reply.
He said during the period, 700 terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir, 1,706 extremists in the northeastern states and 2,552 naxalites in naxal-affected states were arrested.
Foreigners: As per available information, 46,587 foreigners were staying illegally in India as on December 31, 2003, he said. The possibility of some of them having acquired ration cards/voter identity cards cannot be ruled out, he added.
The Minister said about 60 illegal Pakistani immigrants are residing in Punjab and about 4,000 in Rajasthan.
Kashmiri migrants: An inter-ministerial team to prepare a plan to rehabilitate Kashmiri migrant families, as announced by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during his visit to Jammu and Kashmir in November, has been constituted, he said.
Jaiswal said no Kashmiri migrant family has returned to their native places so far. He said there are 56,148 such families, of which 34,690 are in Jammu, 19,338 in Delhi and 2,120 families in other parts of the country.
