Indians in China celebrate R-Day

Indians in China on Monday celebrated the 55th Republic Day.

At the Indian embassy in Beijing, Charge d Affaires Debnath Shaw hoisted the tricolour and read out a message from President A P J Abdul Kalam.

The embassy had held a grand reception on January 16 to mark the Republic Day in which Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Wang Yi was the chief guest.

In Shanghai, China's largest city and commercial and industrial hub, Consul General Sujan R Chinoy hoisted the tricolour at a function at his residence.

He later read out Kalam's speech to the assembled Indians in the booming east Chinese metropolis.

The Indian community in Hong Kong also marked the Republic Day at a function at Bharat Bhavan, the residence of Consul General B K Gupta. 

In Australia, the Indian community celebrated the Republic Day by unfurling the tricolour at the Indian high commission in Canberra and the residence of the consulate general in Sydney.

The flag was also hoisted at Indian honorary consulates in Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth.
