Speaking at a gathering of party workers at Sion in Mumbai, Vajpayee responded to party workers' slogans beseeching him to lead the party once again by saying, "No more…I have had enough."

After releasing a book on his life brought out by a pro-Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh publication house, Vajpayee said: "I have been under attack [from my own people] for the first time in my life. This book will definitely help me deal with this."

Vajpayee has been facing severe criticism for listing Gujarat riots as one the reasons for the party's defeat in the last general election. There have been demands that he should make way for Lal Kishenchand Advani to lead the party.
